1 A Dirty Shame DVD
DVD 794043775420 Disc New
Sylvia Stickles's (Tracey Ullman) Baltimore neighborhood is becoming overrun with perverts, and she is very concerned. But that changes when Sylvia gets in a car accident, receiving a hard blow to the head that leaves her sexually voracious. Luckily, she gets a quick fix from Ray Ray (Johnny Knoxville), a tow-truck driver whom she soon discovers to be a high priest of sexual perversion. In the midst of searching indiscriminately for satisfaction and finally relating to her overly buxom, exhibitionist teenage daughter, Clarice (Selma Blair), Sylvia finds herself on the opposite side of a war for decency being waged by the neighborhood "neuters," in which every sexual encounter is an act of revolution! Nearly 35 years from the revolutionary PINK FLAMINGOS, John Waters proves that, even after showing his gentler side (HAIRSPRAY, CRY-BABY), he's not getting soft in his old age. Once again proving his gift for inspired casting--Chris Isaak plays Sylvia's husband and Suzanne Shepherd plays her mother--he creates a virtual comedic catalogue of strange sexual practices sure to please longtime fans and win over the uninitiated. While Waters is no-doubt pleased to have earned a taboo NC-17 rating (mostly for language), he also presents some good-natured fun in the midst of the pervasive perversity.

2 Abel Raises Cain DVD
DVD 689076851183 Disc New
Jenny Abel grew up with an eccentric father, to put it mildly. A film producer and occasional journalist for the likes of NATIONAL LAMPOON magazine, Alan Abel spent his life pulling off a seemingly endless series of elaborate media pranks, whereby he would repeatedly drum up insane causes - from banning human breast-feeding to slapping diapers on animals - and appear on news broadcasts under phony aliases plugging the oddball perspectives. At other times, Abel played practical jokes on the public by convincing them, en masse, of some fallacious truth. But the phenomenon was scarcely local in nature: Abel's hoaxes appeared on programs as institutional as GOOD MORNING AMERICA and in publications as omnipresent as THE NEW YORK TIMES (as when he planted an obituary in the paper, on January 2, 1980, erroneously indicating his own death from a heart attack). Abel also enlisted the top-drawer of talent as his accomplices - he recruited no less than Buck Henry to plug the "diapers on animals" campaign. All of this activity led various media pundits to brand Abel as one of the world's most brilliant satirists, and instilled in Jenny a lifelong fascination with her father's motivations and modus operandi. With the documentary ABEL RAISES CAIN, Jenny Abel takes a long, loving look at her father's life and most unusual career.

6 After Hours DVD
DVD 85391919209 Disc New
A surrealistic black comedy that plays on the paranoia and dread of everyday life in the Big Apple, Martin Scorsese's AFTER HOURS captures what is easily the worst night of one man's life. Computer programmer Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) makes a casual date with Marcy (Rosanna Arquette), a woman he meets in a coffee shop, unaware that it's about to unleash a nightmarish odyssey through the bowels of lower Manhattan. Upon arriving at Marcy's spacious Soho loft, Paul meets her unnerving artist roommate, Kiki (Linda Fiorentino), and the night takes a turn for the worse. Sensing the bad vibes that lie ahead, he immediately decides to return to his home on the Upper East Side. Unfortunately, this isn't such an easy task. In a seemingly endless series of strange and dangerous encounters, Paul begins to fear that he might never make it home again. Working from a clever script by Joseph Minion, Scorsese's film is both hysterical and frightening in its depiction of an insane, neurotic New York City. As the unfortunate hero, Dunne delivers his lines with a baffled incredulousness that also works as a voice for the sympathetic audience, who doesn't know whether to laugh or cringe when things really begin to heat up.

DVD 14381003826 Disc New
A hippy, trippy LSD film from the Summer of Love that follows Alice, an innocent college girl, on her downward spiral into the erotic world of sex and drugs. Alice is led astray by the "joints of pot" her lusty friend Freida uses to seduce her into a web of lesbian pleasure. Alice gets sucked down a rabbit hole of pleasure-seeking as she partakes in nude parties and marijuana smoking; but when she dares to take the ultimate trip, acid, suddenly nothing is what it seems: the black and white photography turns to bright color, nymphettes dance about a psychedelic playland, and giant disembodied breasts develop their own peculiar animation! ALICE IN ACIDLAND is joined on the bill by another classic of the era, SMOKE AND FLESH! A party is going down at Turk's house, and he just got a delivery of pot to make sure everyone will have a good time. Once everyone is high, the free love begins, but the party is crashed by the sleazy Skiff. Fortunately, Turk is able to take care of the problem by slipping the nuisance some LSD, sending him off on a trip of his own. 15 American Hardcore DVD
DVD 43396170940 Disc New
True hardcore fans may balk at the fact that this vibrant document of a scene that prided itself on some staunchly anti-corporate ethics is being distributed by business behemoth Sony, but they needn't worry--AMERICAN HARDCORE was in the can long before the men in suits picked it up for distribution. Paul Rachman's film is bookended by two clips of Ronald Reagan being sworn in for each of his tenures as president, and the director is quick to draw parallels between Reagan's leadership and the explosion of angry young men who picked up guitars, drums, and microphones and exploded onto an unsuspecting ‘80s music scene. Rachman draws on amazing footage of scene leaders such as Bad Brains, Minor Threat, and Black Flag to tell the story, and splices them with interview clips from band members, scenesters, fanzine writers, label bosses, and plenty of the freaks and misfits who were drawn to the pummeling sounds of hardcore. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Rachman's film is the fact that that many of the figures who populated it, such as Minor Threat's Ian Mackye and Black Flag's Henry Rollins, still staunchly stick to the stringent personal and work ethics their younger selves developed back in the day. And what a day it was! As the various talking heads tell of dust-ups with cops, violent scenes at shows, and the development of a supportive musical community across the country, it will be difficult for younger viewers not to feel pangs of jealousy. However, Rachman does briefly cover some of the downsides of hardcore, such as the lack of female performers and the jock-like mentality of those who just showed up at shows looking for a punch-up, but on the whole the film is an upbeat testimony to a movement that was so underground that it simply passed by a lot of the high-haired and colorfully clothed pop fans of the era.

16 American Movie DVD
DVD 43396047020 Disc New
Smith's film is a poignant commentary on what it takes to make an independent film. It also happens to be a genuinely hysterical, crowd-pleasing romp. Trying to get his masterpiece, NORTHWESTERN, off the ground, but failing miserably due to lack of funding and support, struggling Midwestern filmmaker Mark Borchardt instead turns his attention to COVEN, an abandoned 37-minute horror film that he began filming in 1990. His hopes are to sell enough copies of the video to enable him to clear his current debts and begin moving forward with his real baby, NORTHWESTERN. The painstaking effort to get COVEN in the can and onto the screen for the film's world premiere provides the greatest laughs in this undeniably entertaining documentary.

18 American Nightmare DVD
DVD 9322225028012 Disc New
Legendary horror directors reveal the inspirations behind their groundbreaking films of the 1960s and '70s in this thought-provoking documentary from filmmaker Adam Simon. Through film clips and interviews, masters of mayhem George Romero, Tobe Hooper, Wes Craven, David Cronenberg, John Landis, John Carpenter, and Tom Savini discuss how their disturbing cinematic creations were a direct social commentary on the real-life political horrors happening in the U.S. during that turbulent era, including Vietnam, the Cold War, racial segregation, political assassinations, and the Kent State shootings. By placing seminal films like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, SHIVERS, THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE in their proper historical context, THE AMERICAN NIGHTMARE finally gives the horror genre the credit it so rightly deserves as a barometer of the American sociopolitical landscape.

20 American Splendor DVD
DVD 26359203121 Disc New
Harvey Pekar, the hilariously downtrodden Cleveland comic book artist, is the subject of AMERICAN SPLENDOR, titled after Pekar's autobiographical series. Played by actor Paul Giamatti, Pekar also appears as himself, giving the film a documentary feeling with many behind-the-scenes on-set shots. Directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini maintain this balance between the actors and the real-life characters--Pekar's wife Joyce and coworker Toby also appear on set as themselves--while crafting a funny, difficult, heartwarming tale that encapsulates Pekar's life, work, and uniquely bizarre perspectives. Pekar is a pessimistic file clerk with no hope of ever rising above his boring job, slobbish apartment, and bad attitude. Wonderfully set in his ways, Pekar's constant self-deprication is clearly a front for his prolific interests in music and art. When his friend Robert Crumb (James Urbaniak) gets his big break as a comic book artist, Pekar decides to try his hand at the craft. Though he can't illustrate, his stories are good, and Crumb agrees to help draw the pictures. Soon several artists are illustrating Pekar's American Splendor series, and the comic book's readership grows. The film continues through the events of Pekar's life--meeting wife Joyce Brabner, appearing on David Letterman, struggling with cancer, and adopting a daughter--always showing Pekar's no-frills approach to life. A creative and punchy film, AMERICAN SPLENDOR invites viewers into the odd world of Pekar and his comic-book antihero persona.
