Days Run Away Like Wild Horses Over The Hills Charles Bukowski Black Sparrow 0876850050 / 9780876850053 Paperback New This book is Bukowski's finest collection of poetry ever published. As with all prolific writers Buk's books often come with more filler than sustenance- that is not the case here. The poems written for/about Jane highlight his most soulful collection. The usual mask of nonchalance has been stripped away along with the chains of his self-created tough guy/barfly image. The tenderness and warmth are unfiltered by his masculine facade. Moving desolate and often humorous this book is nearly flawless. It is written in such a way that anyone can read and understand. It isn't written in a flowery deeply symbolic style that makes younger readers hate poetry. This book is from the heart mind and fists of a man who has loved suffered hated and laughed. Anyone who has done likewise should be able to appreciate the raw beauty presented within. Make no mistake the alcoholism sex and madness that made Bukowski famous are all represented here as well. This is the book to read if you are interested in the most three-dimensional portrayal of the late poet. Price:

Pleasures Of The Damned Charles Bukowski Ecco 0061228443 / 9780061228445 Paperback New To his legions of fans, Charles Bukowski was--and remains--the quintessential counterculture icon. A hard-drinking wild man of literature and a stubborn outsider to the poetry world, he wrote unflinchingly about booze, work, and women, in raw, street-tough poems whose truth has struck a chord with generations of readers. Edited by John Martin, the legendary publisher of Black Sparrow Press and a close friend of Bukowski's, "The Pleasures of the Damned" is a selection of the best works from Bukowski's long poetic career, including the last of his never-before-collected poems. Celebrating the full range of the poet's extra-ordinary and surprising sensibility, and his uncompromising linguistic brilliance, these poems cover a rich lifetime of experiences and speak to Bukowski's "immense intelligence, the caring heart that saw through the sham of our pretenses and had pity on our human condition" ("The New York Quarterly"). "The Pleasures of the Damned" is an astonishing poetic treasure trove, essential reading for both longtime fans and those just discovering this unique and legendary American voice. Price:

Portions From A Wine-Stained Notebook Charles Bukowski, David Calonne (Editor) City Lights 0872864928 / 9780872864924 Paperback New Charles Bukowski (19201994) one of the most outrageous and controversial figures of twentieth-century American literature was so prolific that many important pieces were never collected during his lifetime. Portions from a Wine-Stained Notebook is a substantial selection of these wide-ranging works most of which have been unavailable since their original appearance in underground newspapers literary journals and even porn magazines. Among the highlights are Bukowski's first published short story Aftermath of a Lengthy Rejection Slip; his last short story The Other; his first and last essays; and the first installment of his famous Notes of a Dirty Old Man column. The book contains meditations on his familiar themes (drinking horse-racing etc.) as well as singular discussions of such figures as Artaud Pound and the Rolling Stones. Other significant works include the experimental title piece; a fictionalized account of meeting his hero John Fante (I Meet the Master); an unflinching review of Hemingway (An Old Drunk Who Ran Out of Luck); the intense autobiographical Dirty Old Man Confesses; and several discussions of his aesthetics (A Rambling Essay on Poetics and the Bleeding Life Written While Drinking a Six-Pack [Tall] In Defense of a Certain Type of Poetry a Certain Type of Life a Certain Type of Blood-Filled Creature Who Will Someday Die and Upon the Mathematics of the Breath and the Way). What is ultimately revealed is an unexpectedly learned mind behind his seemingly off hand productions. Portions from a Wine-Stained Notebook is essential reading for Bukowski fans as well as a good introduction for new readers of this innovative unconventional writer. Price:

Post Office Charles Bukowski Virgin Books 0061177571 / 9780061177576 Paperback New Charles Bukowski's novel Post Office is the first-person account of Henry Chinaski a hard-drinking gambler and womanizer who goes to work for the United States Postal Service in Los Angeles. The story follows his experiences at the post office weaving them together with his accounts of romantic affairs sexual encounters drinking and gambling. Chinaski's life is full of encounters with various unsavory tragic or ridiculous characters. Post Office is the ultimate I hate this job story. It's also an intriguing and highly unflattering look at a quintessential American institution. Bukowski's prose style is crude rude and raw; often very funny sometimes shocking and sometimes poignant. But always highly readable. Bukowski effectively evokes a vision of a mind-numbing soul-killing workplace that is ruled by a petty bureaucracy. On one level Post Office seems to have much in common with a classic social protest novel like Upton Sinclair's The Jungle which also portrays the suffering and degradation experienced by the working person. But ultimately Post Office seems like another species of novel altogether. Bukowski tells his story in a matter-of-fact style; he doesn't seem to care about offending or impressing anyone and seems to offer no social agenda. He just tells it like it is. A fascinating book by an author who I increasingly believe is truly in a class all his own. Price:

South Of No North Charles Bukowski Black Sparrow 0876851898 / 9780876851890 Paperback New South of No North by Charles Bukowski is a collection of short stories. Bukowski started writing short stories twenty years before he hit the poetry -- the bottle was in between and seemingly forever -- and his stories are haunting. You will find where he started in stories that include glimpses into his lost years when he was a drifting worker and bum. When he works in the desert carying railroad ties you feel the slivers in his gloveless hands and you feel what it may have been that drove him to all the rest. South of No North is his early best.
