Pihkal: A Chemical Love Story Shulgin, Alexander 0963009605 / 9780963009609 Paperback The book tells what it assumed to be an autobiography of Alexander and Ann Shulgin (the names have been changed, probably due to the subject matter covered). The book has two main sections, the first section being the story of the two authors. It is full of insight and is a very good read, but I was left with a feeling that perhaps the accounts of the authors while taking drugs were a little too detailed and began to drag slightly (especially towards the end). The second section contains details about synthesis of drugs and the details of their effects at different levels. All this adds up to a great book, definitely recommended but probably more for people with an interest in pschedelic drugs than light bedtime reading. Price:

Simple Plant Isoquinolines Shulgin, Alexander 0963009621 / 9780963009623 Hardcover From the man who has done more research into Ecstasy than any other chemist, author of the best-selling Phenethylamines I Have Known and Tyroptomines I Have Known, this is a comprehensive reference work on isoquinolines found in plants. Found in cacti and poppies among other plants, isoquinolines have various effects and uses, and are commonly used in Chinese medicine. Extremely well-known and respected within his own field and revered by many for his unparalleled research into mind-altering substances, this new text is ideal for botanists, chemists and fans alike. Synopsis The effects and possible uses of isoquinolines, a compound found in many plants, including cactus and poppies, have still yet to be fully explored. Used commonly in Chinese medicine, there is now a great debate amongst chemists as to whether or not isoquinolines contain or contain the potential for psychoactive effects, a concern into which much research is finally being directed. This comprehensive and clear reference work outlines all known varieties of isoquinolines and the plants in which they are found, making it a vital resource for all botanists and chemists interested in investigating this fascinating new field of study. With an introduction that offers detailed background information on isoquinolines, journal references, an appendix and a cross indexing of chemical structures, trivial names, plant names and plant family names, this book is both completely accessible and fully informative.
