602 What Have I Done To Deserve This DVD
DVD 720917538723 Disc New
Gloria (Carmen Maura) tries to hold her insane Madrid family together in this hilariously deadpan working-class comedy from Pedro Almodóvar. Sharing their cramped tenement apartment is Gloria's husband (Luis Hostalot), an abusive cabdriver who forges letters from Hitler; her heroin-dealing son; a younger son who likes to sleep with older men; an eccentric grandmother (Chus Lampreave); and a pet lizard named Dinero. Gloria works several cleaning jobs to try to make ends meet and sniffs cleaning products for relief from the stress, as she gets no thanks from her nagging husband, who eventually drives her to murder. Luckily, she has a friend in next-door neighbor Cristal (Verónica Forqué), a bubbly prostitute who seduces the cop on the case. There's also a girl upstairs who helps Gloria with her housework via telekinesis. This all works sublimely well, thanks to both an inspired cast who plays everything completely straight, and dialogue that spills over with dry wit and keen observation. Almodóvar scored one of his first international hits with this outrageous, irreverent, and touching film. He also appears in a brief cameo as a TV opera star.

606 Case Of Howard Phillips DVD
DVD 736899111526 Disc New
Directors Patrick Mario Bernard and Pierre Trividic team to explore the remarkable life of legendary horror/fantasy author H.P. Lovecraft in a highly unorthodox documentary that vividly portrays the paranoia and madness of the author's best-known works. A highly imaginative author who had become remarkably disillusioned with life by the time he reached adulthood, Lovecraft eschewed reality to pen tell tales that were truly nightmarish. The detailed mythologies he created in such stories as At the Mountains of Madness and The Call of Cthulu were so rich in texture and tone that they inspired both deep-rooted fear as well as a loyal fan-base. Despite the fact that the frequently unemployed author was woefully underappreciated during his own lifetime, his writings have endured to inspire - and terrify - generations of filmmakers and horror fiction novelists. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Renowned German director Helma Sanders-Brahms made her feature-film debut with this potent drama about a politically motivated couple who struggle in the calm that followed the student rebellions and demonstrations of the late 1960s. Grischa, Heinrich, and their friends spend the night talking about their lives and their futures, as the rift between their revolutionary zeal and the pressures of their adult lives increase.

609 L'Age D'or DVD
DVD 738329038823 Disc New
Luis Buñuel's second film is a surreal attack on bourgeios ideals that incited a riot when first released and still retains its power to shock. Buñuel began the film as a collaboration with Salvador Dali, but after a few days working together the two had a falling out and Buñuel made the film himself, incorporating many of Dali's ideas. Its narrative follows two nameless characters, a man and a woman, through a series of scenes connected by dreamlike logic as they try, unsuccessfully, to make love. One memorable sequence finds the couple writhing around on a cliff when a mob of socialites comes upon them and pries them apart. Frustrated, the man sees a yelping poodle and kicks it into the air. L'AGE D'OR is not only an attack on bourgeois life but also a doctrine that directs humanity to live as the surrealists believed they should: that is, by placing love before everything else in life, such as the church, status, and family. Funny, disturbing, and thoroughly bizarre, Buñuel's film is a purposefully blasphemous and corrosive work that attacks social institutions with such vigor and imagination that one cannot help but be entertained.

610 Who Killed Nancy DVD
DVD 741952120094 Disc New
An unofficial companion piece to music historian-turned-filmmaker Alan G. Parker's controversial 2008 tome SID VICIOUS: NO ONE IS INNOCENT, this speculative documentary explores the factual basis for the rumors that Sid Vicious, of the notorious punk band the Sex Pistols, did not kill lover Nancy Spungen in the manner of which he was formally accused. Because the facts surrounding that evening remain permanently murky (Vicious was so out of it that he had no memory what had transpired), Parker resists proposing one theory of how Spungen died and who killed her, and instead presents a host of theories from numerous interviewees directly or tangentially affiliated with the Pistols. Participants include Steve "Roadent" Connolly, Alan Jones, Howie Pyro, Don Letts, and many others. The film also works in crime scene evidence, eyewitness testimonies, and basic biographical material on Vicious that juxtaposes the rocker's meteoric rise and fall alongside the theories on Spungen's demise.

612 Save The Green Planet DVD
DVD 741952308393 Disc New
This is a jaw-droppingly bizarre movie from Korea that mixes scenes of gruesome torture and violence with comedy and heartbreaking profundity. Perhaps as a result of too many amphetamines and violent incidents in his past, beekeeper Lee Byeong Gu (Sin Ha-Gyun) has become convinced that an unscrupulous business tycoon (Kan Man-Shik) is actually an alien from the planet Andromeda. Lee's frumpy acrobat girlfriend (Hwang Jung-Min) helps him abduct the "alien" and torture him into confessing. Meanwhile, a hangdog detective is following a trail leading to Lee's hideout high in the mountains. Let the timid be warned: this is not the antipollution comedy that the title might indicate. Man's inhumanity to man is certainly depicted--as in events like Korea's 1980 Kwangju riots--but there's more going on here than any one summation could describe: bees attack, a pet dog named Earth dines on human remains, alternate theories of evolution are posited (i.e. Noah's Ark was a deep submarine carrying DNA samples); an entire lifetime of films, political turmoil, anime and manga are boiled down and distilled into one profound, multi-textual allegory. Adventurous viewers will be in for one hell of a ride, as this film dares go where few have gone before, yet it does so with heart and intellect to match its wicked humor and headlong momentum.

620 Llik Your Idols DVD
DVD 760137487395 Disc New
A comprehensive survey of some of New York City's post-punk bands, this documentary is equal parts art and music. It starts in 1972, pauses briefly in 1982, and stops in 2002, looking at influential acts during that timeline. The No Wave bands of the early '70s make up the first segment of the film. Gritty black-and-white footage of live performances in SoHo clubs feature Suicide (Martin Rev), Teenage Jesus and The Jerks (Lydia Lunch), the Theoretical Girls (Glenn Branca), and DNA (Arto Lindsay). The music is followed by candid interviews with the artists, filmed in 2002, on digital video, in color. They comment on the political atmosphere in downtown New York at that time, discuss punk influences like Iggy Pop, and explain that they were trying to make something new, even if it wasn't music. Skipping to the '80s, Sonic Youth (Thurston Moore, Lee Renaldo) and the Swans (Michael Gira) emerge on the scene, and early live B&W footage is shown. The final chapter in this fascinating rock-doc takes viewers to 2002, where a smattering of youthful bands mimic the aforementioned. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs talk about their overnight fame. And other post-punk acts like Liars, Black Dice, and the delectable gypsy band Gogol Bordello chime in, with band members sharing their thoughts on the music they make and how it compares to those earlier sounds. Director-producer-photographer S.A. Crary, who made this movie for under $300, pulls it all together with cool title cards, sequences of experimental photography, and abstract chapter headings, making KILL YOUR IDOLS thoroughly enjoyable, and informative.

622 Derailroaded DVD
DVD 760137504993 Disc New
Larry "Wild Man" Fischer was a wildly eccentric singer who in 1968 was discovered on the streets of Hollywood by Frank Zappa, who was intrigued by Fischer's offer to write and perform original songs for passers-by for a mere ten cents each. After hearing a few dollars' worth, Zappa offered Fischer -- who had been wandering the edges of the music business for several years, with no success -- a recording contract, and in 1968 the album AN EVENING WITH WILD MAN FISCHER was released. Sometimes funny, sometimes harrowing, and always boasting Fischer's wobbly matter-of-taste voice and adult-child songwriting, the two-LP set of oddball tunes (including "Merry-Go-Round," "Monkeys vs. Donkeys," "Are You From Clovis," and "The Rocket Rock") sold only modestly, and after an altercation at Zappa's home, Fischer soon found himself without a record deal. While he remained a favorite among a tiny cult of admirers, Fischer was difficult for most folks in the music industry to deal with -- he'd been diagnosed as both a manic-depressive and a paranoid-schizophrenic, and his extreme mood swings, obsessive need for attention, and inability to conform to societal standards of public behavior have kept him at the sidelines of show business as a freak talent, when his abilities are acknowledged at all. But there are a number of people who know music and believe Fischer is a genuine talent, including legendary big band singer Rosemary Clooney, soul icon Solomon Burke, Devo leader Mark Mothersbaugh, and music historian and disc jockey Dr. Demento. DERAILROADED: INSIDE THE MIND OF LARRY "WILD MAN" FISCHER is a documentary which offers a look at Fischer's torturous childhood, his strange adventures in show business, his struggle to be heard, and his constant battle with his own demons; the film includes interviews with Fischer and his admirers, as well as vintage performance clips (including his appearance on LAUGH-IN).

In the late '70s, a Lower East Side graffiti artist who signed his work "Samo" emerged the darling of the New York art scene. Samo's real name was Jean-Michel Basquiat, and in just a few short years, Basquiat would be an internationally celebrated artist. But being a black artist in the 1970s wasn't all fun and fame; despite all of his success, Basquiat found intolerance and misconceptions dogging him at every turn. 629 Guerrilla - The Taking Of Patty Hearst DVD
DVD 767685973837 Disc New
In 1974, young Patty Hearst became a media icon after she was kidnapped from her apartment by a group calling itself the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA). At the time, Patty was an impressionable college student who happened to be the granddaughter of the infamous William Randolph Hearst. The SLA's demands on Hearst's family were unique; hoping to spark a class war in America, they instructed the Hearsts to make a multimillion dollar donation of food to the poor. But the story firmly imprinted itself in the history books when, two months after the initial abduction, Patty appeared to have joined forces with the SLA, and was caught on camera wielding a gun as the team robbed a bank. This documentary on Hearst's story offers some fascinating insights on what happened to her during her time with the SLA. Some startling footage has been unearthed, and some former members of the SLA come forward to give their accounts of the story. Hearst has subsequently enjoyed a post-kidnapping career as an actress, and has appeared in a number of films by the infamous "Pope of Trash" John Waters, whose 2000 film CECIL B. DEMENTED owes a sizable debt to Hearst's kidnapping tale.

Framed for murdering her lover, Carol Madison (Ione Sky) is forced to endure life behind bars in John McNaughton's GIRLS IN PRISON. Carol finds the going rough in the big house and eventually joins a gang run by two hardened convicts, Jennifer (Anne Heche) and Aggie (Missy Crider). Together they fend off the crooked warden and plan a daring breakout. With a crackling script cowritten by legendary screenwriter-director Samuel Fuller, characteristically provocative direction by McNaughton (HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER), and steamy performances from Hecht, Crider, and Skye, GIRLS IN PRISON has all the ingredients for a sizzlingly good time. McNaughton takes his first dive into lesbian erotica (he would go even further in WILD THINGS), bestowing upon viewers a racy shower scene in which Carol is seduced by one of her fellow inmates. In the tradition of classic women-behind-bars films such as CAGED HEAT, WOMEN IN CAGES, and CAGED FURY, GIRLS IN PRISON is both a satisfyingly overstuffed collection of guilty pleasures and a campy noir thriller.

643 Bamboozled DVD
DVD 794043519727 Disc New
Spike Lee turns up the controversy notch once again with BAMBOOZLED, a sizzling satire on race and racism within the modern media world. Harvard-educated writer Pierre Delacroix (Damon Wayans), the only black employee on the staff of a struggling television network, suggests the most absurd idea for a pilot that he can possibly imagine, hoping it will convince his tyrannical boss, Dunwitty (Michael Rapaport), to terminate his contract and fire him. However, his plan backfires and his idea--MANTAN THE NEW MILLENNIUM MINSTREL SHOW--finds great success. The show is a stereotypical and racially charged depiction of the tap-dancing Mantan (Savion Glover) and Sleep 'n' Eat (Tommy Davidson), two lazy, homeless black men who spend their days in a watermelon patch. As the show becomes a national sensation, Delacroix, his assistant Sloan Hopkins (Jada Pinkett), as well as her older brother, aspiring rapper Big Black Af' (Mos Def), begin to see the harm the show is causing the community, triggering outbursts with deadly consequences. Shot on digital video, Lee uses his basic premise to mock and accuse today's entertainers (including Chris Rock, Ving Rhames, gangsta rappers, and Lee himself) for being modern reincarnations of the stereotypical caricatures that were so offensive in the past. The result is a biting commentary that is at turns hysterical, absurd, and poignant.

644 Willard DVD
DVD 794043641923 Disc New
Glen Morgan's WILLARD stars Crispin Glover in the title role as a socially awkward loner who lives with his ailing mother (Jackie Burroughs) in a decrepit old house. Trapped between duties at home and working at a dreary company formerly owned by his deceased father, Willard leads a bleak and routine existence until he befriends Socrates, an albino rat living in the basement. This new friendship leads to an affinity for the ever-growing rodent population under his house, and soon Willard discovers the rats will do anything he tells them. When Willard is pushed too far by his bullying boss (R. Lee Ermey), he decides to use his four-legged companions to get revenge. A perfect pairing of actor and character, Glover is ideal as Willard in this Burton-esque remake of the 1971 cult horror film. Widely known as an introvert and eccentric in real life, Glover expertly transfers his quirks to Willard in a giddily affected performance that ranges from subdued to outraged. Ermey (of FULL METAL JACKET) and Laura Elena Harring (of MULHOLLAND DRIVE) provide excellent support as his dictatorial boss and concerned coworker, respectively, but the true costars of this thriller are two rodents, the affectionate Socrates and the imposing, cat-sized Ben. Although some of the rat scenes are rendered with animatronics or CGI animation, the majority of Glover's scenes with Socrates and Ben involve real animal actors who convey distinct personalities and factor heavily into the story. The clever and darkly comic script even manages to bring in an element of the original film by featuring photos and paintings of Bruce Davison, star of the earlier film, as Willard's dead father. And be sure to listen for both a young Michael Jackson and Glover himself singing WILLARD's adopted theme song, "Ben."

645 Pink Flamingos DVD
DVD 794043751622 Disc New
Baltimore director John Waters's outrageous 1971 debut PINK FLAMINGOS burst onto the filmmaking scene like the ample flesh of its drag-queen star through the seams of a lamé dress. Conceived as a way to garner attention for Waters's fledgling career, this paean to bad taste certainly did just that--so much so that decades later, the film still retains the power to shock with its gleeful demolition of every known human taboo. Waters's attempt at making the most vile and offensive movie ever made is aptly mirrored in his characters' competition for the title of "Filthiest Person Alive." Overweight transvestite and Waters muse Divine (aka Glen Milstead) stars as the current record holder, Babs Johnson, who lives in a trailer park with her trashy friend Cotton (Mary Vivian Pearce), incestuous son Crackers (Danny Mills), and mentally-stunted mother Edie (Edith Massey), who spends her time in a playpen and is obsessed with eggs. Vying for Babs's filthy title is evil middle-class couple Raymond (David Lochary) and Connie Marble (Mink Stole), who fund porno shops, sell heroin to grade-schoolers, and run a white-slave trade that involves kidnapping young women, imprisoning them in their dungeon-like basement, raping and impregnating them, and selling their babies to lesbian couples. In between, there's sex with chickens, whistling rectums, actual fellatio, and canine excrement--ensuring not only gross-out comedy par excellence, but a total assault on bourgeois respectability that rivals the comparatively mild critique of UN CHIEN ANDALOU or L'AGE D'OR. Disgusting, hilarious, and utterly fabulous, PINK FLAMINGOS is guerrilla filmmaking at its finest.

646 Polyester DVD
DVD 794043751721 Disc New
Francine Fishpaw (Divine) is a troubled housewife trapped in suburban Baltimore. Her household is a disaster--her husband is the philandering proprietor of a sleazy movie theater, her daughter performs lewd dances in her high school cafeteria for money, her son is a predatory foot fetishist, and the family pet is suicidal. After she hits alcoholic rock bottom, along comes Todd Tomorrow (Tab Hunter), a dreamboat who runs an art-house drive-in theater. But is he really as angelic as he seems? Francine may require the help of her eccentric nouveau riche best friend, Cuddles (Edith Massey), to discover the truth. Inspired by soap operas and weepy 1950s melodramas, John Waters combines the conventions of that genre (soft lighting, teary organ music) with William Castle-like gimmickry for what was, upon its release, his most polished, biggest budgeted film. The original theatrical release was presented in Odorama--an innovative technique that allowed the audience to smell the movie with the aid of a scented card featuring the same scents Francine picks up with her overactive olfactory powers. Divine gives yet another wonderful comedic performance, and '50s idol Hunter proves that he's game for anything.

647 Festival Express DVD
DVD 794043757327 Disc New
In the summer of 1970, a rock festival travelled across Canada by luxury train, stopping in Toronto, Calgary, and Winnipeg. Lured by the promise of a mobile party, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, The Band, Buddy Guy, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and Ian & Sylvia signed on to the tour for a fraction of their usual fees. The performances and the stars' antics on the train were both filmed, only to be locked away for 25 years. The colorful and thrilling results, seen here for the first time, capture these artists at their loosest and most natural. Fans of Joplin and the Dead will find reason to rejoice in the playful footage of these icons enjoying each other's company on the train, as well as their blistering stage performances. The events are also put into context through new interviews with the surviving musicians, including Buddy Guy, the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir, and Mickey Hart, who speak frankly and humorously about the tour. Once buried in reputation by the era's other historic concert events such as Woodstock, or the Rolling Stones at Altamont--FESTIVAL EXPRESS is proof that a monumental live event in '60s rock has been long overlooked.

648 Manufacturing Consent - Noam Chomsky And The Media DVD
DVD 795975101332 Disc New
Funny, provocative and surprisingly accessible, Manufacturing Consent explores the political life and ideas of Noam Chomsky, world-renowned linguist, intellectual and political activist. In a dynamic collage of new and original footage, biography, archival gems, imaginative graphics and outrageous illustrations, the film highlights Chomsky's probing analysis of mass media. A mammoth, two-part project, Manufacturing Consent is nonetheless light on its feet, favoring a style that encourages viewers to question its own workings, as Chomsky himself encourages his listeners to extricate themselves from this "web of deceit" by undertaking a course of "intellectual self-defense".

650 Corporation DVD
DVD 795975106535 Disc New
THE CORPORATION is a well-organized and deeply fascinating documentary about the growing prominence of large global businesses, and the way that their decisions are impacting the world. The film shows how corporations have ballooned in size and power since the industrial revolution, and explains the laws and loopholes that allow them to remain nearly unaccountable for their actions. If they break a law, they are willing to admit guilt and pay the fine, because the profits outweigh the penalties. Therefore, they continue to cause serious environmental problems by dumping waste into rivers and oceans and by depleting natural resources, resulting in irreversible damage to the earth which also poses a serious threat to human life. Beyond environmental issues, the film shows how corporations exploit underpaid laborers in third world countries, violate basic human rights, make deals with foreign countries who are known enemies of the U.S., and in some instances perpetuate fascist regimes. Valuable, informative talking-head commentary comes from a diverse group including Ray Anderson, CEO of carpet manufacturer Interface; Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, former chairman of Royal Dutch Shell; Dr. Vandana Shiva, feminist and ecologist; Milton Friedman, Nobel prize-winning economist; Marc Barry, corporate spy; Joe Badaracco, professor of business ethics at Harvard; and activists Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, and Michael Moore. Providing useful references to major news stories that illustrate various corporate developments, and good information about how the system works, THE CORPORATION empowers viewers and shows them that they can realistically enact change. For that reason, this documentary makes real progress, encouraging viewers to take the world's future into their own hands and away from corporations whose sole interest is profit.

653 Brothers Of The Head DVD
DVD 796019796620 Disc New
Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe (LOST IN LA MANCHA) mark an extraordinary narrative debut with this faux documentary about Siamese twin punk rockers in the early 1970s. Stunning photography by Anthony Dod Mantle, which occasionally borders on the abstract, augments a story already rife with dramatic potential, which was based on the novel by Brian Aldiss. Recalling Alan Clarke's iconic Sex Pistols biopic SID AND NANCY in its grittiness and the volatile relationship at its core, BROTHERS OF THE HEAD centers on Tom and Barry Howe (real-life twins Harry and Luke Treadaway). Siamese twins recruited at a young age by a sleazy producer, the twins are groomed for a stardom which will inevitably become their downfall. Barry's innate nihilism and anger make him the ideal frontman for the band, while Tom studiously learns the guitar from a bandmate (Bryan Dick). But the brothers' dalliances with drugs, girls, and fame, added to the psychological power struggles already at work between them, eventually put them on the road to destruction. Equal parts homage to rock 'n roll and an insightful character study of a complex relationship, the film fascinates while not taking itself too seriously: Ken Russell's unfinished biopic of the boys is particularly hilarious. The excellent soundtrack of original music by Clive Langer (ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS), actually played by the actors onscreen, tops off this impressive work.

663 There's Gonna Be A God Damn Riot In Here DVD
DVD 804879088899 Disc New
When Bukowski arrived in Vancouver in 1979, his legend preceded him. Hank and Linda Lee Beighle (later to become Mrs. Bukowski) arrived the night before. There was a dense fog that night and they were forced to land 50 miles away in Abbotsford and were bused to Vancouver International several hours late - but, they were here! The reading was at an old hall in the Downtown Eastside; used for weddings and dances and was perfect since it reeked of life and use and was layered with nostalgia. It was raw, raucous, and raunchy. Also sublime. 650 people came. There was plenty of yelling and screaming and applause and repartee. There were also plenty of tears and shouts resounding with love and adulation for this man.

664 Last Straw DVD
DVD 804879088998 Disc New
Charles Bukowski didn't like to do live poetry readings. He did readings for the money, usually only a few hundred dollars. His performances were legendary; cultivating anarchy, he'd goad the audience to mutiny, and usually challenge somebody, or anybody, to fight. What happens between the poems is not filler. It's performance art. Only a few of his readings were filmed. This performance on March 31st, 1980 at the Sweetwater Inn in Redondo Beach, California, turned out to be the very last poetry reading Bukowski ever gave, even though he lived and wrote for another 14 years. The video of that reading remained in storage for over 25 years, and is presented here for the first time.

671 Aristocrats DVD
DVD 821575540759 Disc New
"A man walks into a talent agent's office with his family and says, Have I got an act for you! The talent agent replies, So what do you do?" So begins "The Aristocrats," a joke that has been handed down from comedian to comedian for decades but is rarely told on stage. The next part of the joke varies, allowing for improvisation, and the only requirement in telling the joke is that it be as offensive as possible. Paul Provenza and Penn Jillette spent two years documenting as many versions of this infamous joke as possible, cornering comedians like Drew Carey, Whoopi Goldberg, Susie Essman, and Paul Reiser whenever and wherever possible. The results are surprising, and often take their humor to places that may make sensitive viewers uncomfortable. While comic legends such as Don Rickles, The Smothers Brothers, and Phyllis Diller admit their familiarity with the joke, they shy away from telling their own versions. Some may be surprised, however, to see performers who are normally associated with family-friendly material, including Bob Saget and Jason Alexander, describing scatological and incestuous acts with deadpan glee. Ultimately, though, THE ARISTOCRATS is more than just many versions of the same dirty joke--it is an exploration of the workings of the unrestricted comic mind.

676 Un Chien Andalou DVD
DVD 824820192994 Disc New
Hailed as a surrealistic cinematic masterpiece, UN CHIEN ANDALOU forms the meeting of two brilliant minds--those of arch painter and sculptor Salvador Dali, and fellow Spaniard and legendary filmmaker Luis Bunuel. Shot in 1929, the duo plunged headlong into their fantastic imaginations, pulling ideas from their subconscious minds, and presenting them on screen. Based on dreams that Bunuel and Dali had experienced, their one rule for shooting was to reject conventional narrative so that any meaning attached to the piece was purely in the eye of the beholder. Which leads neatly into the most infamous scene in UN CHIEN ANDALOU; namely the close-up shot of an eyeball being pierced by a razor, which may not appeal to the fainthearted viewer, but is certainly one of the most talked about scenes in cinema history. Provocative, shocking, and powerful, the legend of UN CHIEN ANDALOU still resonates throughout the film world with an intensity that will remain undiminished for many years to come.

690 Silent Light DVD
DVD 842498000038 Disc New
A man of faith succumbs to a temptation he cannot resist in this drama written and directed by Carlos Reygadas. Johan (Cornelio Wall Fehr) and Esther (Miriam Toews) have been married for years, and live with their children in a Mennonite community Mexico. While Johan and Esther are both taciturn by nature, a moral dilemma is tearing Johan apart -- he's been having an affair with another woman in their circle, Marianne (Maria Pankratz), and feels he may be falling in love with her. While the tenants of his faith strictly forbid adultery, his need to be with Marianne seems stronger than the dictates of his moral compass, and while he's confessed his sins to Esther and his close friend Zacarias (Jacobo Klassen), subjecting himself to the shame of truth hasn't buffered his desires. Even worse, after Johan confesses to his father about his lust for Marianne, he's told that he may have fallen under the sway of Satan. LUZ SILENCIOSA (aka SILENT LIGHT) received its world premiere at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.

691 Anatomy Of Hell DVD
DVD 842498020050 Disc New
Over the course of her career as a writer and filmmaker, Catherine Breillat (ROMANCE, FAT GIRL) has never shied away from controversial topics, using both mediums to explore her strong feminist opinions. Joining a generation of similarly taboo-breaking French directors such as Francois Ozon and Gaspar Noé, Breillat has no problem displaying explicit material to her audience and forcing them to confront their own assumptions about the relations between men and women. In ANATOMY OF HELL, based on her own novel, she presents a largely allegorical scenario positing that all men are inherently fearful of female sexuality. A gay man (ex-porn star Rocco Siffredi) prevents a woman (former Chanel and Gaultier model Amira Casar) from killing herself in a nightclub. Thrown together by this fated moment, she offers to pay him to watch her in the most intimate way--leading to a confrontational exploration of male and female psychology and misogyny. Never one to back down from the controversial, Catherine Breillat's explicit film ANATOMY OF HELL is perhaps the work that gets closest to her theoretical preoccupations.

697 American Nightmare DVD
DVD Disc New
Legendary horror directors reveal the inspirations behind their groundbreaking films of the 1960s and '70s in this thought-provoking documentary from filmmaker Adam Simon. Through film clips and interviews, masters of mayhem George Romero, Tobe Hooper, Wes Craven, David Cronenberg, John Landis, John Carpenter, and Tom Savini discuss how their disturbing cinematic creations were a direct social commentary on the real-life political horrors happening in the U.S. during that turbulent era, including Vietnam, the Cold War, racial segregation, political assassinations, and the Kent State shootings. By placing seminal films like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, SHIVERS, THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE in their proper historical context, THE AMERICAN NIGHTMARE finally gives the horror genre the credit it so rightly deserves as a barometer of the American sociopolitical landscape.
