13 Until The Light Takes Us Aaron Aites & Audrey Ewell
DVD 82354252625 DVD New
This documentary takes a fascinating look at the underground anti-consumerist metal scene that gained popularity in Norway in the 1990s. Led by the messages of bands from the black metal scene, members of the movement eventually followed alleged leader Varg Vikernes to commit such violent acts as burning churches all over the country. Encouraged by fabricated accounts of outlandish and even supernatural activity, members of the movement eventually turned fiction into reality, creating a firestorm of controversy and bringing the stuff of urban legends into the history books.

14 Stephen Colbert And Philosophy: I Am Philosophy Aaron Allen Schiller (Editor)
Open Court 0812696611 Paperback New
At the head of The Colbert Report one of the most popular shows on television Stephen Colbert is a pop culture phenomenon. More than one million people backed his fake candidacy in the 2008 U.S. presidential election on Facebook a testament to the particularly rich set of issues and emotions Colbert brings to mind. Stephen Colbert and Philosophy is crammed with thoughtful and amusing chapters each written by a philosopher and all focused on Colbert's inimitable reality — from his word creations (truthiness wikiality freem and others) to his position as a faux-pundit who openly mocks Fox News and CNN. Although most of the discussion is centered around The Colbert Report this collection does not neglect either his best-selling book I Am America (And So Can You!) or his public performances including his incendiary 2006 White House Press Correspondents' Dinner speech.

15 Revolution For The Hell Of It: The Book That Earned Abbie Hoffman A Five-year Prison Term At The Chicago Conspiracy Trial Abbie Hoffman
Thunder's Mouth Press 1560256907 Paperback New
While the supremely popular Steal This Book is a guide to living outside the establishment Revolution for the Hell of It is a chronicle of Abbie Hoffman's radical escapades that doubles as a guidebook for today's social and political activist. Hoffman pioneered the use of humor theater and shock value to drive home his points and in Revolution for the Hell of It he gives firsthand accounts of his legendary adventures from the activism that led to the founding of the Youth International Party—or Yippies!—to the 1968 Democratic National Convention protests (a Perfect Mess) that resulted in his conviction as part of the Chicago Seven. Also chronicled are the mass demonstrations he led in which over fifty thousand people attempted to levitate the Pentagon using psychic energy and the time he threw fistfuls of dollar bills onto the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and watched the traders scramble. With antiwar sentiment once again in a furor and an incendiary political climate not seen since the book's original printing Abbie Hoffman's voice is more essential than ever.

18 Book Of Rhymes: The Poetics Of Hip Hop Adam Bradley
Perseus Books Group 0465003478 Paperback New
If asked to list the greatest innovators of modern American poetry few of us would think to include Jay-Z or Eminem in their number. And yet hip hop is the source of some of the most exciting developments in verse today. The media uproar in response to its controversial lyrical content has obscured hip hop’s revolution of poetic craft and experience: Only in rap music can the beat of a song render poetic meter audible allowing an MC’s wordplay to move a club-full of eager listeners. Examining rap history’s most memorable lyricists and their inimitable techniques literary scholar Adam Bradley argues that we must understand rap as poetry or miss the vanguard of poetry today. Book of Rhymes explores America’s least understood poets unpacking their surprisingly complex craft and according rap poetry the respect it deserves.

25 I, Goldstein: My Screwed Life Al Goldstein
Thunder's Mouth Press 1560258683 Paperback New
A genuine survivor of the culture wars of the 1960s Screw magazine publisher Goldstein comes clean in a rambling autobiography-cum-cultural manifesto. Goldstein 69 hasn't had an easy life. Indeed he was recently homeless for a year--a consequence of frittering away a not-insignificant pile of pelf amassed during his heyday which wealth shouldn't be considered in the same breath with the fortune of that other notorious sex publisher Hugh Hefner. Playboy was all about tasteful nudity and air-brushing whereas Screw was all in-your-face sweaty reality and in many ways a precursor of Larry Flynt's Hustler which shoved porn into the mainstream along lines greased by Goldstein. Now on marriage number five Goldstein works in Internet media with sexually oriented Web sites and services. This book written with former Screw associate Friedman invokes familiar names from Jacob Javits to Mad publisher William M. Gaines as it summarizes and justifies a life lived on the cultural barricades. Details about genuine sixties characters such as porn star John C. Holmes (Johnny Wadd) add fascination.

29 Watchmen Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons
Diamond Comic Distributors 0930289234 Paperback New
Has any comic been as acclaimed as Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen? Possibly only Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns but Watchmen remains the critics' favorite. Why? Because Moore is a better writer and Watchmen a more complex and dark and literate creation than Miller's fantastic subversive take on the Batman myth. Moore renowned for many other of the genre's finest creations (Saga of the Swamp Thing V for Vendetta and From Hell with Eddie Campbell) first put out Watchmen in 12 issues for DC in 1986-87. It won a comic award at the time (the 1987 Jack Kirby Comics Industry Awards for Best Writer/Artist combination) and has continued to gather praise since.

35 Outsider Albert Camus, Joseph Laredo (Translator)
Penguin 0141182504 Paperback New
Meursault leads an apparently unremarkable bachelor life in Algiers until he commits a random act of violence. His lack of emotion and failure to show remorse only serve to increase his guilt in the eyes of the law, and challenges the fundamental values of society a set of rules so binding that any person breaking them is condemned as an outsider. For Meursault, this is an insult to his reason and a betrayal of his hopes; for Camus it encapsulates the absurdity of life. In "The Outsider" (1942), his classic existentialist novel, Camus explores the predicament of the individual who refuses to pretend and is prepared to face the indifference of the universe, courageously and alone.

36 Rebel Albert Camus, Olivier Todd (Introduction), A. Bower (Translator)
Penguin 0141182016 Paperback New
"The Rebel" is Camus's attempt to understand the time 'I live in' and a brilliant essay on the nature of human revolt. Published in 1951, it makes a daring critique of communism, how it had gone wrong behind the Iron Curtain, and the resulting totalitarian regimes. It questions two events held sacred by the left wing, the French Revolution of 1789 and the Russian Revolution of 1917 that had resulted, he believed, in terrorism as a political instrument. In this towering intellectual document, Camus argues that hope for the future lies in revolt, which unlike revolution is a spontaneous response to injustice, and a chance to achieve change without giving up collective and intellectual freedom.

37 Choosing Death Albert Mudrian
Feral House 193259504X Paperback New
In 1986 it was unimaginable that death metal and grindcore would ever impact popular culture. Yet this shockingly fast and barbaric amalgam of hardcore punk and heavy metal would define the musical threshold of extremity for years to come. Initially circulated through an underground tape-trading network by scraggly angry young boys death metal and grindcore spread faster than a plague of undead zombies as bands rose from every corner of the globe. By 1992 the genre's first legitimate label Earache Records had sold well over a million death metal and grindcore albums in the United States alone. Choosing Death featuring an introduction by John Peel conquers the lofty task of telling the two-decade-long history of this underground art form through the eyes and ringing ears of the artists producers and label owners - past and present - who propelled the movements. The book covers the scene in every dark detail from its late '70s beginnings in the UK's anarcho-punk scene to the early 80s American version that featured unplayable - and to some unlistenable - riffs to legendary groups like Napalm Death and Godflesh to the genre's alleged death and resurrection in the late 1990s.

A powerful work of speculative fiction that has enthralled and terrified readers for generations, it remains remarkably relevant to this day as both a warning to be heeded as we head into tomorrow and as thought-provoking, satisfying entertainment.

40 Diary Of A Drug Fiend Aleister Crowley
Red Wheel/Weiser 1578634946 Paperback New
It is a story of love and the couples reliance on drugs to survive nothing else matters to them. It is not the subject matter that is important it is Crowleys ability to explain and enlighten the reader to the glory of drugs and their hellish undertow. Crowley was a lifelong heroin addict and is more than qualified to explain. He tells us that when on a drug like heroin one is perfectly capable of thought and able to aknowledge the world around them however the impression left is like flashes of lightning which illuminate the area giving you a glimpse of what is around for the briefest of moments. The novel is very psychological with insight to the thoughts and therefore the actions of a drug addict.

44 Magick Aleister Crowley
Weiser Books 0877289190 Hardcover New
Liber Aba is as important to magick as Einsteins general theory of relativity is to science. If you are familiar with Weisers 1993 edition don't be fooled by the cover this edition is a beast666 of a book that contains considerably more in the way of extended appendices full glossary of terms editors notes that could keep one occupied for days full index and never before published A.'.A.'. papers amongst lots more. The Master Therion would i'm sure be chuffed to bits to see his magnum opus as he originally intended but never lived to see in his own lifetime. If you only ever intend to buy one of Frater Perdurabo's numerous works this one has all the right bits in one place. Crowley made sure no-one would ever get to the bottom of what he was ultimately about but this book is certainly the place to begin. Highly recommended.

45 Spiritual Journey Of Alejandro Jodorowsky Alejandro Jodorowsky
Park Street Press 1594771731 Paperback New
Jodorowsky's memoirs of his experiences with Master Takata and the group of wisewomen--magiciennes--who influenced his spiritual growth - Reveals Jodorowsky turning the same unsparing spiritual vision seen in El Topo to his own spiritual quest - Shows how the author's spiritual insight and progress was catalyzed repeatedly by wisewoman shamans and healers In 1970, John Lennon introduced to the world Alejandro Jodorowsky and the movie, El Topo, that he wrote, starred in, and directed. The movie and its author instantly became a counterculture icon. The New York Times said the film "demands to be seen," and Newsweek called it "An Extraordinary Movie!" But that was only the beginning of the story and the controversy of El Topo, and the journey of its brilliant creator. His spiritual quest began with the Japanese master Ejo Takata, the man who introduced him to the practice of meditation, Zen Buddhism, and the wisdom of the koans. Yet in this autobiographical account of his spiritual journey, Jodorowsky reveals that it was a small group of wisewomen, far removed from the world of Buddhism, who initiated him and taught him how to put the wisdom he had learned from his master into practice. At the direction of Takata, Jodorowsky became a student of the surrealist painter Leonora Carrington, thus beginning a journey in which vital spiritual lessons were transmitted to him by various women who were masters of their particular crafts. These women included Dona Magdalena, who taught him "initiatic" or spiritual massage; the powerful Mexican actress known as La Tigresa (the "tigress"); and Reyna D'Assia, daughter of the famed spiritual teacher G. I. Gurdjieff. Other important wisewomen on Jodorowsky's spiritual path include Maria Sabina, the priestess of the sacred mushrooms; the healer Pachita; and the Chilean singer Violeta Parra. The teachings of these women enabled him to discard the emotional armor that was hindering his advancement on the path of spiritual awareness and enlightenment.

48 Hippo Eats Dwarf: A Field Guide To Hoaxes And Other Bullshit Alex Boese
Harvest Books 0156030837 Paperback New
Hoaxes are but one tile in the vast mosaic of mis- and disinformation detailed in this delicious compendium of fakery. The ones that Boese offers are a far cry from the classic deceptions spotlighted in his previous The Museum of Hoaxes; they're mainly smirky Internet pranks like a fake CNN.com news report that fellatio protects against breast cancer. But Boese finds inexhaustible fodder for his theme of the ubiquitous fakery of modern life including Enron-style business scams lip-synching scandals artificial flavors mislabeled meats doctored photos covert marketing campaigns celebrity plastic surgery and denials of surgery breast implants and that oldest of ruses the fake orgasm. He also covers a smattering of conspiracy theories—from perennials like subliminal advertising and the Paul is dead rumor to a recent Sudanese panic he dubs the penis-melting Zionist robot comb—proving that we are at our most gullible when we are most suspicious. Boese wittily tracks down the leads to establish the truth or—usually—falsehood behind the facade and sprinkles in handy Reality Rules to bolster readers' defenses against nonsense the most pertinent of which is [j]ust because you read it on the Internet doesn't mean it's true.

50 Down And Derby: The Insider's Guide To Roller Derby Alex Cohen, Jennifer Barbee
Soft Skull Press 1593762747 Paperback New
When most Americans hear the words "roller derby" today, they think of the kitschy sport once popular on weekend television during the seventies and eighties. Originally an endurance competition where skaters traveled the equivalent of a trip between Los Angeles and New York, derby gradually evolved into a violent contact sport often involving fake fighting. But after nearly dying out in the nineties, derby has been making a comeback. From a mere handful of leagues in the United States just a few years ago, there are now more than 17,000 skaters in more than 400 leagues around the world, with hundreds of thousands of die-hard fans. Down and Derby will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the sport. Written by veteran skaters as both a history and a how-to, Down and Derby is a brassy celebration of every aspect of the sport, from its origins in the late 1800s, to the rules of a modern bout, to the science of picking an alias, to the many ways you can get involved off skates. Informative, entertaining, and executed with the same tough, sassy, DIY attitude--leavened with plenty of humor--that the sport is known for, Down and Derby is the first and last book on derby you'll ever need.

57 Discrepancies Alex Gross
Gingko Press 1584234261 Hardcover New
Frederick Douglass, a Centaur, serpents, Christ, and an assortment of mythical beasts are just some of the characters that appear within the world of Alex Gross's lush, incongruous paintings in Discrepancies. Historical figures coexist with fashionable men and women, often on their cell phones, and frequently set in landscapes that simultaneously invoke both Gothic Flemish Art and the metropolitan, billboard-infested urban advertising that we find inescapable in our world today. Gross's highly involved, figurative oil paintings defy categorization: his unusual hybrids, for all their dreamlike mystery, powerfully convey universal themes such as Love and Despair, Globalization and Consumerism, Communication and the lack of it. This slim, oversized edition catalogs the best of his groundbreaking work over the last four years, including several pieces from his Autumn 2010 exhibition at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York.

58 Religion Of Ayahuasca Alex Polari de Alverga
Park Street Press 159477398X Paperback New
An insider's experience and personal transformation with ayahuasca and the religious philosophy surrounding it - An intimate account of the genesis of the Santo Daime tradition - Edited and introduced by Stephen Larsen, author of The Shaman's Doorway In search of something to restore his spiritual connection to life after his release from captivity as a political prisoner in Brazil, Alex Polari de Alverga had a transformative encounter with Padrinho Sebastiao Mota de Mela, one of the two revered founders of Santo Daime. A potent synthesis of Christianity and indigenous Amazonian practices of entheogen use, mediumship, and healing, the Santo Daime church provided Alverga with an alternative to his disillusionment with modern society. His quest for spiritual initiation eventually led him deep into the heart of the rain forest to Mapia, one of the spiritual centers of Santo Daime, where he became a teacher and leader of the Daime community. The Religion of Ayahuasca is a story of a classic spiritual encounter comparable to the Tibetan Saint Milarepa's search for his teacher Marpa. It is also an intimate account of the genesis of an important religious tradition from its modest beginnings in Brazil to its growth throughout the world, offering an inside look at the spiritually centered village of Mapia--a model for communities in the 21st century--and at the religious leader who helped create it. Providing insight into the spiritual path the Daime offers, Alverga's tale reveals the new depths of Being made available through the sacred use of ayahuasca.

60 Imperial Crusades: Iraq, Afghanistan And Yugoslavia Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St Clair
Verso 1844675068 Paperback New
The war on Iraq didn't begin with the lethal pyrotechnics of Shock and Awe, and it didn't end with George W. Bush's made-for-TV aircraft landing. Undetected by the mainstream press, the US campaign against Iraq began many years before, featuring cruel sanctions, weekly bombardments, and assassinations. With Saddam deposed, the US now finds itself mired in a grinding occupation, its troops under constant attack with no exit in sight.
Iraq was just one of three major imperial crusades in the last decade, orchestrated by a new generation of American politicians, both Democrat and Republican, who backed pre-emptive strikes to overthrow unruly regimes in Yugoslavia and Afghanistan under the pretext of humanitarian intervention. Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair reported on these wars as they happened. Years ahead of the pack, they exposed the economic motives behind the wars and how fraudulent intelligence, a spaniel press corps, a servile United Nations, and corporate propaganda techniques were used to sell them to the public.
Imperial Crusades chronicles the lies that are now returning almost daily to haunt the liars in Washington and London, the secret agendas and the under-reported carnage of these wars. It is a ripely vivid, blow-by-blow commentary from Cockburn and St. Clair, and regular CounterPunch writers such as the late Edward Said, former marines Chris White and Scott Cossette, historians Gary Leupp and Doug Lummis, psychologist Carol Norris, economist Paul de Rooij, human rights lawyer Joanne Mariner, and former senior CIA analysts Bill Christison and Ray McGovern.

63 Pihkal: A Chemical Love Story Alexander Shulgin, Ann Shulgin
Transform Press 0963009605 Paperback New
The book tells what it assumed to be an autobiography of Alexander and Ann Shulgin (the names have been changed probably due to the subject matter covered). The book has two main sections the first section being the story of the two authors. It is full of insight and is a very good read but I was left with a feeling that perhaps the accounts of the authors while taking drugs were a little too detailed and began to drag slightly (especially towards the end). The second section contains details about synthesis of drugs and the details of their effects at different levels. All this adds up to a great book definitely recommended but probably more for people with an interest in pschedelic drugs than light bedtime reading.

71 Death Becomes Them Alix Strauss
Harper Paperbacks 006172856X Paperback New
Kurt Cobain Anne Sexton Mark Rothko Ernest Hemingway Adolf Hitler . . . all famous some rich and powerful some beloved some abhorred. But when life and circumstance got to be too much each headed for the exit door. Sigmund Freud overdosed on morphine. Dorothy Dandridge stripped naked and swallowed a handful of antidepressants. Hunter S. Thompson shot himself while talking to his wife on the phone. These are the lonely personal nightmares behind celebrity suicides—the deaths and their causes are as diverse as the victims themselves. In Death Becomes Them Alix Strauss bids each one a final good-bye while examining the last days and the unbearable incidents that drove these notables to end their lives. She decodes their notes touches on their accomplishments and delves into the methodologies of their deaths using autopsy and police reports and personal photos. Strauss also explores the morbid curiosity that feeds our fixation with famously tortured souls and provides lists of other controversial bizarre and poorly executed suicides in this mammoth tome.

72 Anarchy And Art Allan Antliff
Arsenal Pulp Press 1551522187 Paperback New
The coupling of Anarchist political movements and art is not a topic likely to attract broad interest yet the issues dealt with by author and art historian Antliff (Anarchist Modernism) in this collection of essays have greater range than the politics of the extreme left. One typically enlivening chapter is devoted to the personal reminiscences of Susan Simensky Bietila a painter on the scene of the American student movement of the 1960s; among stories of student strikes and absurdist performance art-like protests she relates her struggle with art professors at Brooklyn College who insisted that fine art could not have explicit political content. That debate is central to Antliff's work and the implications he draws in these eight scholarly essays carry resonance beyond the political questions used to frame it. Bookended by an argument between French 19th century leftists Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and Emile Zola and the fall of the Berlin wall (overlapped by the first Gulf War) with stops in 1880s Paris New York during WWI post-Revolution Russia and McCarthy-era America among others. Antliff's latest will prove lively and thought-provoking work for art students and scholars. 16 color plates.

79 It Still Moves Amanda Petrusich
Faber & Faber 086547950X Hardcover New
Part travelogue part cultural criticism part music appreciation It Still Moves does for today’s avant folk scene what Greil Marcus did for Dylan and The Basement Tapes. Amanda Petrusich outlines the sounds of the new weird America—honoring the rich tradition of gospel bluegrass country folk and rock that feeds it while simultaneously exploring the American character as personified in all of these genres historically. Through interviews road stories geographical and sociological interpretations and detailed music criticism Petrusich traces the rise of Americana music from its gospel origins through its new and compelling incarnations (as evidenced in bands and artists from Elvis to Iron and Wine the Carter Family to Animal Collective Johnny Cash to Will Oldham) and explores how the genre is adapting to the twenty-first century. Ultimately the book is an examination of all things American: guitars cars kids motion passion enterprise and change in a fervent attempt to reconcile the American past with the American present using only dusty records and highway maps as guides.

80 Fist Of The Spider Woman Amber Dawn (Editor)
Arsenal Pulp Press 1551522519 Paperback New
Traditional horror has often portrayed female characters in direct relation to their sexual role according to men, such as the lascivious victim or innocent heroine; even vampy, powerful female villains, such as the classic noir "spider women," use their sexual prowess to seduce and overwhelm married men. "Fist of the Spider Woman" is a revelatory anthology of horror stories by queer and transgressive women and others that disrupts reality as queer women know it, instilling both fear and arousal while turning traditional horror iconography on its head.
In this collection, horror (including gothic, noir, and speculative writing) is defined as that which both titillates and terrorizes, forcing readers to confront who they are. Kristya Dunnion's "Homeland" reveals the horrors that lurk on your average night in a lesbian bar; Elizabeth Bachinsky's "Postulation on the Violent Works of the Marquis de Sade" is a response to Sade from a feminist (yet kinky) perspective; and Amber Dawn's "Here Lies the Last Lesbian Rental" is a paranormal fantasia about urban gentrification, set in a house rented by lesbians on the eve that it is sold to new owners.
Subversive, witty, sexy--and scary--"Fist of the Spider Woman" poses two questions: "What do queer women fear the most?" and "What do queer women desire the most?"
Amber Dawn is a writer, performance artist, and radical sex/gender activist who co-edited "With a Rough Tongue: Femmes Write Porn."

81 Complete Short Stories Of Ambrose Bierce Ambrose Bierce
University of Nebraska Press 0803260717 Paperback New
Before he trailed off into the wilds of Mexico, never to be heard from again, Ambrose Bierce achieved a public persona as "bitter Bierce" and "the devil's lexicographer." He left behind a nasty reputation and more than ninety short stories that are perfect expressions of his sardonic genius. Brought together in this volume, these stories represent an unprecedented accomplishment in American literature. In their iconoclasm and needle-sharp irony, their formal and thematic ingenuity and element of surprise, they differ markedly from the fiction admired in Bierce's time. Readers familiar with the classic "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" will want to turn to Bierce's other Civil War stories. Also included here are his horror stories, among them "The Death of Halpin Frayser" and "The Damned Thing," and such tall tales as "Oil of Dog" and "A Cargo of Cat."

84 Devil's Dictionaries Ambrose Bierce, Chaz Bufe, J. R. Swanson (Illustrator)
Morpheus International 1884365353 Paperback New
This compilation of hundreds of biting, witty, cruel, and hilarious definitions combines the best 200 definitions from Ambrose Bierce's classic "The Devil's Dictionary, with more than 500 definitions from the most humorous and stinging entries in Chaz Bufe's "The American Heretic's Dictionary. This new edition includes 50 new definitions from Bufe and new biting illustrations by San Francisco artist and filmmaker J. R. Swanson. The Bierce definitions focus on his favorite targets, including religion, jingoism masquerading as patriotism, the "lickspittle" press, the thievery inherent in the American economic system, and the multitude of idiocies and hypocrisies pervading American social and political life. Bufe's definitions share many of the same targets, but also skewer such contemporary plagues as the "right to life" movement, religious fundamentalism, the IRS, and the puritanically "politically correct." Bufe also turns a jaundiced eye on both male and female sexual attitudes, something which Bierce, writing in much more conservative times, was not free to do.

The book tells the amazing life of these women and contains some horrific stories of abductions and forced tattooing at the hands of savages. Today it is estimated that about 25% of the US population wear at least one tattoo. Could it be that these women that nobody talked about have a larger responsibility in this cultural movement? For sure. So all tattooed people male or female should know about them. --Did You Know? at Cyril Huze Blog People who've gotten tattoos say that once you get one you'll want another because sporting tattoos is addicting. So is this book. Author Amelia Klum Osterud's fascination with tattooed ladies (and circus people by extension) is infectious and it's hard not to be caught up by her excitement in this unique dual-take on women's history via circus theme. But solid research is only half the appeal. The other half comes with the rare and unusual photographs that grace nearly every page of The Tattooed Lady including pictures of the Ladies as well as sideshow troupes and a few tattooed men. If you're a carny at heart if you enjoy reading about women's history or if you're thinkin' about inkin' grab The Tattooed Lady. This book is plenty sharp.

93 Mad Love André Breton; translated by Mary Ann Caws
University of Nebraska Press 0803260725 Paperback New
Breton father of the surrealist movement saw that the basic problem of making a living could interfere with love as well as poetry. Love for the French poet had to be transformed into a powerful emotion that put the lover in touch with the marvelous. The focus of this transformation in his own case was artist Jacqueline Lamba with whom he lived in New York Mexico and Marseilles. L'Amour fou (1937) is convoluted and stilted when it sets forth his surrealist philosophy of mad love romantic and sometimes incandescently lyrical when it presents autobiographical reminiscences. Included is a moving letter Breton wrote to his daughter (I want you to be madly loved). This first English-language translation of the surrealist text is also the first volume in the French Modernist Library.

98 Albion Dreaming Andy Roberts
The Friday Project Limited 1905736274 Hardcover New
Contrary to popular belief LSD is much more connected to Britain than it is to the US. This engaging book looks at the use of LSD in British society from its arrival in 1952 to the present day. It provides a hidden history of a controversial drug and how it permeated British culture. The author explores LSD's use by the medical profession in treating a variety of psychological and mental problems. At the same time The Ministry of Defense believed they were on the brink of harnessing LSD as a battlefield incapacitation drug which would enable wars to be won without loss of life. But LSD's popularity rose with its use among the British counterculture from the 1950s beatniks through to the late 80s acid house parties. At its height when it was legal LSD affected the lives and philosophies of significant individuals (politicians scientists writers educators entertainers artists journalists) as well as ordinary people for good and bad. This book is the first to explore LSD's amazing influence on British culture and society.
