Based on a manga by Eiji Ootsuka, MPD-PSYCHO: MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DETECTIVE is a six-episode miniseries directed for Japanese television by prolific cult filmmaker Takashi Miike (AUDITION, ICHI THE KILLER, GOZU). In typical Miike fashion, the gore-drenched miniseries centers on homicide detective Yousuke Kobayashi (Naoki Hosaka), who suffers from multiple-personality disorder after being traumatized by the murder of his wife. Taking on the personality of coldly calculating investigator Kazuhiko Anamiya, Kobayashi is able to solve the case and arrest his wife's murderer, the serial killer Shinji Nishizono (also played by Hosaka). But a few years later, a mysterious cult with barcoded eyeballs is linked to a series of copycat murders that imitate the work of Nishizono, and the mentally fragile Kobayashi/Anamiya is recalled from retirement to solve the case. Despite being a television production, MPD-PSYCHO still contains the shocking violence and bizarre plotlines that have made Miike a cult favorite around the world, sporting as much gore and mayhem as is possible on TV. This collection presents the miniseries in its entirety.
