1 1000 Record Covers Michael Ochs
Taschen 3822840858 / 9783822840856 Paperback New
A fascinating survey of cover art (TASCHEN's 25th anniversary special edition) Record covers are a sign of our life and times. Like the music on the discs, they address such issues as love, life, death, fashion, and rebellion. For music fans the covers are the expression of a period, of a particular time in their lives. Many are works of art and have become as famous as the music they stand for?Andy Warhol's covers, for example, including the banana he designed for The Velvet Underground. This special edition of Record Covers presents a selection of the best 60s to 90s rock album covers from music archivist, disc jockey, journalist, and ex-record publicity executive Michael Ochs's enormous private collection. Both a trip down memory lane and a study in the evolution of cover art, this is a sweeping look at an under-appreciated art form.

4 A Cultural Dictionary Of Punk, 1974-1982 Nicholas Rombes
Continuum 0826427790 / 9780826427793 Paperback New
At a cursory glance Rombes's compendium has the form of a dictionary covering punk bands from the Adolescents to the Zeroes but scratch the surface and you'll discover a profoundly weird document where the notion of punk¯ expands to include discussions of Angela Carter Thomas Pynchon Don DeLillo and Barry Hannah—although even Rombes (Ramones) admits the last is stretching the point. The tone veers from the academic to the confessional: How can you hesitate about a song that has saved you more than once from the black depths you are prone to fall into?¯ Rombes asks in an entry concerning the British band Wire. There are several forays into the fictional including stories about imagined versions of Patti Smith and Joey Ramone as well as entries written by Ephraim P. Noble¯ who is almost certainly a fictional alter ego. If it were touted as a definitive guide to punk culture the dictionary's omissions would be glaring—but this is something altogether different: a personal investigation into the significance of punk rock an attempt to inject critical studies with a big dose of chaos and anarchy¯ and thereby create a compelling cultural narrative.

5 A Deeper Blue: The Life and Music of Townes Van Zandt Robert Earl Hardy
University of North Texas Press 157441285X / 9781574412857 Paperback New
This is the first serious biography of a man widely considered one of Texas'--and America's--greatest songwriters. Like Jimmie Rodgers, Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, and Hank Williams, Townes Van Zandt was the embodiment of that mythic American figure, the troubled troubadour. "A Deeper Blue "traces Van Zandt's background as the scion of a prominent Texas family; his troubled early years and his transformation from promising pre-law student to wandering folk singer; his life on the road and the demons that pursued and were pursued by him; the women who loved and inspired him; and the brilliance and enduring beauty of his songs, which are explored in depth. The author draws on eight years' extensive research and interviews with Townes' family and closest friends and colleagues. He looks beyond the legend and paints a colorful portrait of a complex man who embraced the darkness of demons and myth as well as the light of deep compassion and humanity, all "for the sake of the song."

6 A Dysfunctional Success Eric Goulden
Vision 1904316182 / 9781904316183 Paperback New
"It's difficult to know where to start, so I think I'll begin at the beginning and see how I get on..." This is definitely not another one of those usual rock autobiographies. It's the story of one man's bewilderment with life and his desent into alcoholism and near-redemption. with a music backdrop. Eric Goulden does have an excellent music background but that's actually a bonus and not essential to the book. After pursuing an art career and working at several menial jobs, Wreckless Eric first found fame in the mid-1970s when he signed to the emergent Stiff Records with such label-mates as Ian Dury (who played drums in Eric's band), Elvis Costello, and Nick Lowe and the Damned. His eccentric single. "Whole Wide World"/"Semaphore Signals." is one of the minor classics of the punk era. After he left Stiff in 1981 he continued to work as a musician, songwriter--his songs have been recorded by The Monkees, Marianne Faithful, and Cliff Richard--and recording artist. This is a witty. entertaining, and insightful foray into the crazy world of British music in the 70s and 80s.

9 All Yesterdays' Parties: The Velvet Underground In Print: 1966-1971 Clinton Heylin
The Perseus Books Group 0306814773 / 9780306814778 Paperback New
This is a treasure trove of rediscovered words and ephemera on the band that was synonymous with New York: the Velvet Underground. The Velvet Underground was among the most influential bands of all time. It has often been said that while very few saw the Velvet Underground perform live everyone who did started a band. Thus their sound can be easily detected in later artists such as David Bowie Iggy Pop the Talking Heads REM Jane's Addiction Yo La Tengo Luna and the Strokes. They are also credited with creating a streetwise pre-punk sensibility that has become inseparable from the popular image of downtown New York. 'Discovered' by Andy Warhol in 1966 the Velvet Underground feature Lou Reed and John Cale became the house band of the avant-garde and composed songs simultaneously abrasive and poignant standing in stark striking contrast to the prevailing flower power vibe of the era. With such notorious pedigree it is only natural that the story of the Velvet Underground has become shrouded in myth and hyperbole. All Yesterday's Parties gathers for the first time writings and ephemera contemporaneous with the band's actual existence providing an invaluable snapshot of an era by such writers as Lester Bangs Robert Greenfield Patti Smith and Lou Reed himself. Coupled with a complete discography never-before-published flyers original reminiscences of their live performances and song-by-song commentary it is an invaluable discovery for anyone interested in the Velvet Underground their roots and legacy.

14 Apathy For The Devil Nick Kent
Da Capo 0306819155 / 9780306819155 Paperback New
Chronicling Nick Kent's up-close, personal, often harrowing adventures with the Rolling Stones, Lester Bangs, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, the Sex Pistols, and Chrissie Hynde, among scores of others, "Apathy for the Devil" is a picaresque memoir that bears witness to the beautiful and the damned of this turbulent decade.
As a college dropout barely out of his teens, Kent's first five interviews were with the MC5, Captain Beefheart, the Grateful Dead, the Stooges, and Lou Reed. But after the excitement and freedom of those early years, his story would come to mirror that of the decade itself, as he slipped into excess and ever-worsening heroin use. "Apathy for the Devil" is a compelling story of inspiration, success, burn out, and rebirth from a classic wordsmith.

15 Apocalypse Jukebox Edward Whitelock, David Janssen
Soft Skull Press 1593762216 / 9781593762216 Paperback New
From its indefinite beginnings through its broad commercialization and endless reinterpretation American rock-and-roll music has been preoccupied with an end-of-the-world mentality that extends through the whole of American popular music. In Apocalypse Jukebox Edward Whitelock and David Janssen trace these connections through American music genres uncovering a mix of paranoia and hope that characterizes so much of the nation's history. From the book's opening scene set in the American South during a terrifying 1833 meteor shower the sense of doom is both palpable and inescapable; a deep foreboding that shadows every subsequent development in American popular music and as Whitelock and Janssen contend stands as a key to understanding and explicating America itself. Whitelock and Janssen examine the diversity of apocalyptic influences within North American recorded music focusing in particular upon a number of influential performers including Bob Dylan Leonard Cohen John Coltrane Devo R.E.M. Sleater-Kinney and Green Day. In Apocalypse Jukebox Whitelock and Janssen reveal apocalypse as a permanent and central part of the American character while establishing rock-and-roll as a true reflection of that character.

At over 500 pages this thick little British import is an exhaustive survey of the Roots Rocker Era of reggae: '69 thru early 80's when dancehall took over. The book begins with the birth of Jamaican music and the rise of the sound systems. Ska Rocksteady then Roots Reggae are examined. Economicsand the rise of Rastafarism are woven throughout the story. The various producers and their work are discussed along with the importance of Britain as a sales base and the emergence of Trojan. Dub DJ's producers singers rhythm sections etc are all discussed.
