99th Monkey Eliezer Sobel Santa Monica Press 159580028X / 9781595800282 Paperback New While a romp through the New Age is not everyone's cup of tea novelist publisher and editor Sobel (Minyan) does a fine job making his 30-year quest for spiritual awakening widely identifiable with a funny clear-eyed account that takes readers around the world and through a gauntlet of gurus shamans workshops and retreats not to mention sex and drugs (legal and otherwise). Sobel's twin assets are his willingness and his sense of humor both apparent from the start in his encounter with a guru named Ram Dass whose first instruction to Sobel is to take off his pants (So I did). Other episodes include Primal Therapy training with a teacher who rents his office space for porn production the est training that teaches people to accept reality as it is (and then rope everyone they know into the program) and tours through Jerusalem India and Brazil. Sobel's spiritual journey doesn't provide any answers (these days the title on his business card is Human Being) but provides lots of engaging regular-guy perspective on modern man's confounding array of ancient and contemporary fulfillment schemes.

A Biography - Timothy Leary Robert Greenfield Harvest Books 0156032066 / 9780156032063 Paperback New To a generation in full revolt against any form of authority, "Tune in, turn on, drop out" became a mantra, and its popularizer, Dr. Timothy Leary, a guru. A charismatic and brilliant psychologist, Leary became first intrigued and then obsessed by the effects of psychedelic drugs in the 1960s while teaching at Harvard, where he not only encouraged but instituted their experimental use among students and faculty. What began as research into human consciousness turned into a mission to alter consciousness itself. Leary transformed himself from serious social scientist into counterculture shaman, embodying the idealism and the hedonism of an age of revolutionary change. Timothy Leary is the first major biography of one of the most controversial figures in postwar America.

Advanced Techniques Of Clandestine Psychedelic and Amphetamine Manufacture Second Edition Uncle Fester Festering Publications 0970148585 / 9780970148582 Paperback New I begin this new second edition with updated scams and schemes for obtaining chemicals, and move onto the latest techniques for extracting ephedrine or pseudoephedrine from pills or herbal ephedra. Then the book really shifts into high gear as I detail a series of new and high yielding meth recipes which don't require obtaining difficult materials such as iodine, red P, or anhydrous ammonia. These new methods are all easily supplied off the hardware store shelves. I follow this with an examination of the use of the amino acid phenylalanine, found off the shelf at health food stores, as an alternative starting material rather than using ephedrine or pseudoephedrine. Finally, Mr. X writes from the federal pen detailing the mistakes his fellow inmates made which landed them in their regrettable situation. This book is the most up to date and relevant material on this very interesting topic.

Adventure Of Self-Discovery Stanislav Grof State University of New York 0887065414 / 9780887065415 Paperback New Stanislav Grof was chief of psychiatric research at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center and an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After more than thirty years of studying nonordinary states of consciousness Grof has concluded that the avenues of exploration available to our psyches via holographic interconnectedness are more than vast; they are virtuallly endless. Initially Grof investigated the clinical uses of the hallucinogen LSD at the Psychiatric Research Institute in his native Prague Czechoslovakia. It quickly became clear that serial LSD sessions were able to expedite the psychothereapeutic process and shorten the time necessary for the treatment of many disorders. But LSD opened up much more than just issues involving their illnesses and included experiences of reliving what it was like to be in the womb explore what it was like ot be other living things and even other objects able to tap into the consciousness of their relatives and ancestors accessing racial and collective memories in past history and occassionally related uncannily accurate precognitive information. In an even stranger vein they sometimes encountered nonhuman intelligences traveled to what appeared to be other universes and other levels of reality. Perhaps Grof's most remarkable discovery is that the same phenomena reported by individuals who have taken LSD can also be experienced without resorting to drugs of any kind. Grof and his wife Christina developed a simple nondrug technique for inducing these nonordinary states of consciousness. They call their technique holotropic therapy and use only rapid and controlled breathing evocative music and massage and body work to induce altered states of consciousness. Grof describes his current work and gives a detailed account of his methods in this book.

Ayahuasca Joan Parisi Wilcox Park Street 0892811315 / 9780892811311 Paperback New A comprehensive autobiographical account of the transforming experiences possible with ayahuasca- Reveals the protocols of a traditional ayahuasca retreat and the importance of its ritual diet, isolation, and sacred songs- Relates an extensive personal account of the traditional indigenous use of ayahuasca for healing and revelation"Ayahuasca: The Visionary and Healing Powers of the Vine of the Soul "is an autobiographical account of the author's work with ayahuasca, a potent and sacred plant brew of the Amazon region that is known for its extraordinary visionary and healing powers. As she learned from her experience, with the help of ayahuasca we are able to grasp our paradoxical nature, the first step to acceptance of ourselves in both our glorious and dark aspects. Ayahuasca teaches us how to release the illusions we hold about ourselves and makes it possible to integrate our many diverse aspects to acquire our true power. This book reveals the ritual protocols that must be followed prior to partaking of ayahuasca, including the traditional preparatory "diet"--which requires enduring austere conditions, isolation, and only small amounts of bland food before receiving the powers of the plant spirit from an "ayahuasquero, " a healing master--and the sacred songs, "icaros," that are sung when imbibing the substance. Although the use of ayahuasca is growing among "underground" spiritual seekers and through the burgeoning ayahuasca tourism trade in South America, few of its seekers understand how it is used traditionally and the importance of the rituals the indigenous people follow. With this book, the author hopes to restore the importance of these indigenous practices so that we may truly understand all the gifts of ayahuasca.

Blue Tide: The Search For Soma Mike Jay Autonomedia 1570270880 / 9781570270888 Paperback New In the beginning there was soma. The Rig Veda, the earliest sacred text of the ancient Indo-Europeans, includes dozens of hymns in praise of this psychedelic plant which, when drunk, takes its subject to the realm of the gods on its blue tide. BLUE TIDE tells the story of the search for soma, and uses a diverse range of approaches -- travel and ethnography, science and narrative history, detective story and first-person drug experiences -- to examine the question of its nature and identity. In doing so, it sheds light not just on the identity of soma, but on the broader mystery of the original relationship between psychedelic drugs and religion. BLUE TIDE, more than any other book I've read, satisfactorily answers the plethora of queries concerning the history of drugs as a means to soul searching, attaining spiritual enlightenment, and getting off one's face. Read it before you get high. Read it before you die -- Howard Marks, author of MR. NICE.
