2 Against The Stream Noah Levine
Harper 006073664X / 9780060736644 Paperback New
Levine's first book Dharma Punx was the autobiography of a young hell-raiser. Having escaped juvenile hall and drug addiction through the slow discipline of Buddhist practices the son of Buddhist author Stephen Levine is now a spiritual teacher. In this book he presents what he has learned about and through Buddhism. The compelling personal narrative may be gone but the disarming frank tone that made the first book persuasive remains. He writes about the challenge of celibacy for example a different kind of difficulty than that posed by intimate relationships. Levine has taken the Buddha's teachings to heart—he would call it heart-mind—and clearly returns to such central ideas as impermanence and suffering giving his thinking simplicity and consistency. Considering there's a lot of Buddhism here the book is free of a lot of Buddhist-speak. An appendix includes to-the-point instructions for a variety of meditations that relate to essential Buddhist qualities and ideas. Levine's no-frills approach makes this a short book that will be accessible for young adults with little or no experience of Buddhism. Whether the book is about a revolutionary way of life is arguable but it is an honest book—what Buddhists would call right speech—driven by right intention

9 Diary Of A Drug Fiend Aleister Crowley
Red Wheel/Weiser 1578634946 / 9781578634941 Paperback New
It is a story of love and the couples reliance on drugs to survive nothing else matters to them. It is not the subject matter that is important it is Crowleys ability to explain and enlighten the reader to the glory of drugs and their hellish undertow. Crowley was a lifelong heroin addict and is more than qualified to explain. He tells us that when on a drug like heroin one is perfectly capable of thought and able to aknowledge the world around them however the impression left is like flashes of lightning which illuminate the area giving you a glimpse of what is around for the briefest of moments. The novel is very psychological with insight to the thoughts and therefore the actions of a drug addict.

10 Do What Thou Wilt Lawrence Sutin
St. Martin's Griffin 0312288972 / 9780312288976 Paperback New
Aleister Crowley was a blustery coward, an arrogant, misogynistic racist with fascist leanings, and a callous user, as often threatened by his sexuality as he claimed to be liberated by it. But he was also a groundbreaking poet and an iconoclastic visionary whose literary and cultural legacies extend far beyond the limits of his reputation. This controversial individual, a frightening mixture of egomania and self-loathing, has inspired passionate--but seldom fair--assesments by historians. Sutin, by treating Crowley as a cultural phenomenon, and not simply a sorcerer or a charlatan, convinces skeptic readers that the self-styled "Beast" remains a fascinating study in eccentricity.

11 God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything Christopher Hitchens
Allen & Unwin 0446697966 / 9780446697965 Paperback New
'This is easily the most impressive of the present crop of atheistic and anti-theistic books: clever, broad, witty and brilliantly argued.' - Sydney Morning Herald . Christopher Hitchens has been hailed as 'one of the most brilliant journalists of our time' (UK Observer ). Here he makes the ultimate case against organised religion. In God is Not Great , Hitchen tweezes through the major religious texts with forensic shrewdness. With chapters entitled Religion Kills', and Is Religion Child Abuse?', he fearlessly argues for a secular life based on science and reason, tarring religion as man-made wish-thinking. He documents the ways in which religion is a cause of dangerous sexual repression and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos; in Hitchen's vision, hell is replaced by the Hubble telescope's view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the double helix. Principally, Hitchens argues that the concept of an omniscient God has profoundly damaged humanity, and proposes that the world might be a great deal better off without 'Him'.

12 Have A Nice Doomsday Nicholas Guyatt
Ebury 0061152242 / 9780061152245 Paperback New
In "Have a Nice Doomsday," Nicholas Guyatt searches for the truth behind a startling statistic: 50 million Americans have come to believe that the apocalypse will take place in their lifetime. They're convinced that, any day now, Jesus will snatch up his followers and spirit them to heaven. The rest of us will be left behind to endure massive earthquakes, devastating wars, and the terrifying rise of the Antichrist. But true believers aren't sitting around waiting for the Rapture. They're getting involved in debates over abortion, gay rights, and even foreign policy. Are they devout or deranged? Does their influence stretch beyond America's religious heartland--perhaps even to the White House?
Journeying from Texas megachurches to the southern California deserts--and stopping off for a chat with prophecy superstar Tim LaHaye--Guyatt looks for answers to some burning questions: When will Russia attack Israel and ignite the Tribulation? Does the president of Iran appear in Bible prophecy? And is the Antichrist a homosexual?
Bizarre, funny, and unsettling in equal measure, "Have a Nice Doomsday" uncovers the apocalyptic obsessions at the heart of the world's only superpower.

15 Magick Aleister Crowley
Weiser Books 0877289190 / 9780877289197 Hardcover New
Liber Aba is as important to magick as Einsteins general theory of relativity is to science. If you are familiar with Weisers 1993 edition don't be fooled by the cover this edition is a beast666 of a book that contains considerably more in the way of extended appendices full glossary of terms editors notes that could keep one occupied for days full index and never before published A.'.A.'. papers amongst lots more. The Master Therion would i'm sure be chuffed to bits to see his magnum opus as he originally intended but never lived to see in his own lifetime. If you only ever intend to buy one of Frater Perdurabo's numerous works this one has all the right bits in one place. Crowley made sure no-one would ever get to the bottom of what he was ultimately about but this book is certainly the place to begin. Highly recommended.

18 Rapture Ready! Daniel Radosh
Soft Skull Press 159376281X / 9781593762810 Paperback New
What does it mean when a band is judged by how hard they pray rather than how hard they rock? Would Jesus buy "Jesus junk" or wear "witness wear"? What do Christian skate parks, raves, and romance novels say about evangelicalism -- and America? Daniel Radosh went searching for the answers and reached some surprising conclusions.
Written with the perfect blend of amusement and respect, "Rapture Ready!" is an insightful, entertaining, and deeply weird journey through the often hidden world of Christian pop culture. This vast and influential subculture -- a $7 billion industry and growing -- can no longer be ignored by those who want to understand the social, spiritual, and political aspirations of evangelical Christians.
In eighteen cities and towns throughout thirteen states -- from the Bible Belt to the outskirts of Hollywood -- Radosh encounters a fascinating cast of characters, including Bibleman, the Caped Christian; Rob Adonis, the founder and star of Ultimate Christian Wrestling; Ken Ham, the nation's leading prophet of creationism; and Jay Bakker, the son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, and pastor of his own liberal, punk rock church.
From Christian music festivals and theme parks to Passion plays and comedy nights, Radosh combines gonzo reporting with a keen eye for detail and just the right touch of wit. "Rapture Ready!" is a revealing survey of a parallel universe and a unique perspective on one of America's most important social movements.

19 Religion Explained Pascal Boyer
Vintage 0465006965 / 9780465006960 Paperback New
What's it all about? Though we might never answer the really big questions--with good reason--maybe we can understand why we ask them. Cognitive anthropologist Pascal Boyer tackles this topic in the unapologetically titled Religion Explained and it is sure to polarize his readers. Some will think it's an impermissible invasion of mental territory beyond the reach of reason; others will see it as the first step toward a more complete understanding of human nature--and Boyer is acutely aware of the emotionally charged nature of his work. This knowledge informs his decision to proceed without caution as he warns readers early on that most will risk being offended by some of his considerations. Readers who can lay aside their biases will find great rewards here; Boyer's wide scholarship and knack for elegant writing are reasons enough for reading his book. That gods and spirits are construed very much like persons is probably one of the best-known traits of religion. Indeed the Greeks had already noticed that people create gods in their own image.... All this is familiar indeed so familiar that for a long time anthropologists forgot that this propensity requires an explanation. Why then are gods and spirits so much like humans? Peppering his study with examples from all over the world particularly the Fang people of Africa Boyer offers plenty of evidence for his theory that religious institutions exist to maintain particular threads of social integrity. Though he uses the tools of evolutionary psychology he is more careful than most EP proponents to avoid ad hoc and circular arguments. Best of all at least to those unmortified at the idea of examining religion critically his theories are potentially testable. Even if he turns out to be dead wrong at least Religion Explained offers a new and powerful framework for thinking about our spiritual lives.

20 Revelation St John the Divine
Creation Books 1840680164 / 9781840680164 Paperback New
The Revelation Of St John The Divine. the terminal document of the Holy Bible, subject of countless studies and interpretations.
Is Revelation in fact the ultimate Satanic text, an invocation to the Anti-Christ, the Great Beast 666 who is poised to take control of our decaying planet?
Is it a prophecy of nuclear war and entropy, the utter destruction of the universe which comes with the breaking of the Seventh Seal?
Or is it an eye-witness account of the first wave of alien invasions of Earth, a primitive response to deep-space technology we can only now begin to comprehend?
Revelation is presented here as a work in its own right, as its millennial significance reaches critical mass, to be re-evaluated by theologians, scientist and the common man alike. In his revolutionary introduction, apocalypse watchman Kenneth Rayner Johnson (author of Armageddon 2000) ponders each and every possibility of the text's origins and meaning -- and emerges with a staggering conclusion.
