2048: Humanity's Agreement to Live Together J. Kirk Boyd Berrett-Koehler 1605093300 / 9781605093307 Paperback New "2048 "tells the story of the most important social movement in the 21st century: humanity’s agreement, in writing, to create a social order that will allow people to live together in peace and prosperity based upon human rights and the rule of law. Many of the problems the world faces, such as war, poverty, and environmental ruin are the by-product of a flawed international social order. Fortunately, there is an international agreement, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which all countries signed in 1948, that promises a social order of justice, equality, and freedom. But although the UDHR was agreed to by all countries it is only a declaration and is unenforceable in courts of law. The 2048 Project, launched by the author and his colleagues at the University of California School of Law and from which the book gets it’s name, is a movement to make the fundamental rights in the Declaration enforceable in the courts of all countries by 2048, the 100th anniversary of the Universal Declaration. Through its programs and Web site, the 2048 Project provides education, research materials, and a place for drafters to post documents, as well as hosts international conferences on human rights. "2048 "tells how the UDHR came to be written and the origins of the movement to make it enforceable; lays out the five basic freedoms the UDHR is meant to protect; and gives detailed advice on what everyone can do to make international human rights a reality.

50 Years Of Recuperation McKenzie War Princeton Architectural Press 1568987897 / 9781568987897 Hardcover New From antiglobalist activists and corporate adbusters to online hackers and guerilla street artists the influence of the Situationist International (SI) remains visible writ large across our contemporary cultural landscape. In 50 Years of Recuperation McKenzie Wark the critically acclaimed author of A Hacker Manifesto explores how our contemporary understanding of art politics and even reality itself has been shaped by these original culture jammers. Wark suggests not only what is still vital in the Situationist legacy but also how today’s provocateurs might pick up the thread of those who dared to negate their contemporary world as a whole and imagine it anew.

A Secret History Of Consciousness Gary Lachman Lindisfarne Books 1584200111 / 9781584200116 Paperback New 'Sophisticated and impressive. Moving from meditations on prehistoric and Neanderthal consciousness to the 'irruptions of time' wrought on us by the pace of life and the 'simultaneities' of digital media and the Internet Secret History of Consciousness packs a powerful punch. 9 out of 10 -- a white-water ride.' -- Mike Jay Fortean Times 'In this remarkable book Lachman has approached the subject from many different angles [and] offers ideas from many thinkers providing a rich mix. Well worth the effort and a book to go back to again and again.' -- Pamela Allsop Light: A Review of Spiritual and Psychic Knowledge Winter 2004 'What is lucidly and insightfully drawn together in this book is not so much a secret history as a neglected history. It can be read with profit both by those interested in the nature of consciousness and in the history of reflections upon its nature and characteristics. It is well referenced and has a helpful bibliography. This is a book which I would wish to refer to again.' -- Kevin Tingay Christian Parapsychologist March 2004 'There is much of interest in this informative work.' -- The Beacon July 2004 'A useful and thought-provoking book clearly and enthusiastically written and neatly contextualising many ideas. For those who have read deeply but not widely it will be an excellent overview and introduction to Steiner's antecedents and contemporaries.' -- Pat Cheney New View Autumn 2003 'A marvellously exhilarating gallop through every important modern theory of consciousness from Steiner to Maslow from Bucke's cosmic consciousness to Gebser's integral consciousness.' -- Colin Wilson author of The Occult and Mysteries 'Highly readable and interesting.' -- Greenock Telegraph 10 October 2003 'A must read for those seeking an escape from our contemporary culture's cul-de-sac.' -- Daniel Pinchbeck author of Breaking Open The Head 'Lachman challenges many contemporary theories by reinserting a sense of the spiritual back into the discussion ... Profoundly erudite yet easy to read this book is a provocative mind-stretcher.' -- Leonard Schlain author of The Alphabet Versus the Goddess 'This book is itself a cultural correction to the overemphasis on the material aspect of life.'

Anarchy And Art Allan Antliff Arsenal Pulp Press 1551522187 / 9781551522180 Paperback New The coupling of Anarchist political movements and art is not a topic likely to attract broad interest yet the issues dealt with by author and art historian Antliff (Anarchist Modernism) in this collection of essays have greater range than the politics of the extreme left. One typically enlivening chapter is devoted to the personal reminiscences of Susan Simensky Bietila a painter on the scene of the American student movement of the 1960s; among stories of student strikes and absurdist performance art-like protests she relates her struggle with art professors at Brooklyn College who insisted that fine art could not have explicit political content. That debate is central to Antliff's work and the implications he draws in these eight scholarly essays carry resonance beyond the political questions used to frame it. Bookended by an argument between French 19th century leftists Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and Emile Zola and the fall of the Berlin wall (overlapped by the first Gulf War) with stops in 1880s Paris New York during WWI post-Revolution Russia and McCarthy-era America among others. Antliff's latest will prove lively and thought-provoking work for art students and scholars. 16 color plates.

Apocalypse Culture Adam Parfrey Feral House 0922915059 / 9780922915057 Paperback New First published in 1987 this anthology of doomster essays has become a fixture on the bookshelves of every Tom Pierced Dick and Harry. After finally reading it I have to admit that my prejudice against those who think that being cool means reading lots of ReSearch magazines kept me away from what is actually a fascinating volume wherein the most absurd inexcusable positions are defended with calm intelligence and witty rationality. With essays ranging from the sexual liberation of necrophiliacs to strong cases against art and agriculture editor Adam Parfrey's collection is one that Tristan Tzara would enjoy if he were to rise from his mouldy grave in search of good bathroom reading Apocalypse Culture is compulsory reading for all those concerned with the crisis of our times. An extraordinary collection unlike anything I have ever encountered. These are the terminal documents of the twentieth century.-J.G. Ballard

Archaeology Of Violence Pierre Clastres Semiotext(e) 0936756950 / 9780936756950 Paperback New Pierre Clastres broke up with his mentor Claude Levi-Strauss to collaborate with Gilles Deleuze and Felix Gattari on their "Anti-Oedipus." He is the rare breed of political anthropologist--a Nietzschean--and his work presents us with a generalogy of power in a native state. For him, tribal societies are not Rousseauist in essence; to the contrary, they practice systematic violence in order to prevent the rise in their midst of this "cold monster" the state. Only by waging war with other tribes can they maintain the dispersion and autonomy of each group. In the same way, tribal chiefs are not all-powerful; to the contrary, they are rendered weak in order to remain dependent on the community. In a series of groundbreaking essays, Clastres turns around the analysis of power among South American Indians and rehabilitates violence as an affirmative act meant to protect the integrity of their societies. These "savages" are shrewd political minds who resist in advance any attempt at "globalization."

Baader-Meinhof Stefan Aust, Anthea Bell Oxford University Press 0195372751 / 9780195372755 Hardcover New The Baader-Meinhof Group--later known as the Red Army Faction (RAF)--was a violent urban guerilla group which terrorized Germany in the 1970s and '80s killing 47 people wounding 93 taking 162 hostages and robbing 35 banks--all in an attempt to bring revolution to the Federal Republic. Stefan Aust's masterful history of the Group presents the definitive account capturing a highly complex story both accurately and colorfully. Much new information has surfaced since the mass suicide of the Groups' leaders in the 1980s. Some RAF members have come forward to testify in new investigations and formerly classified Stasi documents have been made public since the fall of the Berlin Wall all contributing to a fuller picture of the RAF and the events surrounding their demise. Aust presents the complete history of the RAF from the creation in 1970 to the breakup in 1998 incorporating all of the new information. For instance there is growing evidence that the German secret service eavesdropped on Baader Meinhof and the other RAF members imprisoned in Stammheim and that they knew that the terrorists planned a mass suicide but did nothing to prevent it. Also there is new information about the role of the RAF lawyers (among them Otto Schily who later was Minister of the Interior in Gerhard Schroder's cabinet) and the roles of the different RAF members and the rivalry between them. The volume will also contain numerous photos. Terrorism today is never far from most people's thoughts. Baader-Meinhof offers a gripping account of one of the most violent terrorist groups of the late twentieth century in a compelling look at what they did why they did it and how they were brought to justice.

Basic Bakunin Robert M. Cutler Prometheus 0879757450 / 9780879757458 Paperback New The Basic Bakunin has works that Bakunin did over a short period of time mostly speaking of the International but after reading this I can see why it is called the Basic Bakunin: all you need to know about Bakunin's views of the State education knowledge work equality democracy freedom etc is contained in this 250 page book.Bakunin is the socialist willing to speak for a truly classless society with full political social and economic equality where freedom is maximized only through these conditions. He believes the State only exists in oppressive societies and reforms within the State will only continue class oppression. Hence his many criticisms of Bourgeois Socialists who he believes aren't true socialists at all. I disagree on a few points Bakunin makes but everything he says is essential for anyone who is into political philosophy or socialism to consider. I especially found Bakunin's views of education and equality interesting as I share many insights with him. He goes a bit into psychology and nature vs. nurture arguments in these viewpoints and also in his viewpoints on patriotism. The editor's introduction gives insights into how Bakunin is different than Marx the words the editor adds in Bakunin's writings make things more clear the notes serve the same purpose and the Glossary of terms at the end are a great bonus. Black Is A Color Elvan Zabunyan Dis Voir 2914563205 / 9782914563208 Paperback New In "Black is a Color," contemporary art historian and curator Elvan Zabunyan proposes a new approach to contemporary art and its history through the practice of Black American artists from the Harlem Renaissance to today. Combining a historical study with probing critical analysis, "Black is a Color" depicts an America marked indelibly by its slavery past, out of which Afro-American contemporary artists have been able to build a singular and engaged body of work to protest against the cultural and political consequences of racial discrimination. In chapters covering notions of "Black conscience," the relation of "attitude" to form, and women Afro-American artists, Zabunyan traces the emergence of artistic identity in various forms of representation (painting, sculpture, photography, video, and performance). Close readings of the oeuvres of David Hammons, Adrian Piper, and others uncover the place of the body, urban space, and memory in the works of Black artists, who are represented with more than 130 images.
